When we find a job, we know that we have to work more than the hours stated in the contract. We have to work according to the needs of their clients. As a result of covid, working hours have increased considerably. Remote working has intensified the problem. The average working day worldwide has lengthened by almost two hours. Inboxes fill up over breakfast. Deadlines stretch into the evening. Zoom meetings stretch into the early hours of the morning. For many workers, this situation has become an expectation. Before Covid, this situation already existed. In fact, it has existed since the industrial age, as employees who worked beyond their hours were reimbursed. From 2010 onwards we started to be hooked on new technologies. In the aftermath of the pandemic, we have normalized overwork. Normally overwork is well regarded because it gives you power. We don't know how to say no, we take a call, we answer an email no matter what time it is or where we are.
